The design

The checks sit close in tone to the pink, which keeps the body reading as one colour from a distance and as pattern up close. The pallu is banded horizontally in gold and beige across its full width. The bugdi border reads the same on both faces.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

Tone-on-tone checking is a quiet piece of skill. The weaver holds the pattern in a shade so close to the ground colour that from across a room the pink looks solid, and only at arm's length does the structure appear. Then the pallu opens out into gold and beige bands and the restraint pays off.

The border is bugdi, woven so the design reads the same on both faces.

The cloth is featherlight and soft, and it does not stiffen after its first clean. Small irregularities in it are the mark of a hand at the loom, present in a piece that is otherwise finished and checked.
