Indigo carried through a close check, ending in a pallu banded with gold stripes and finished against black.

The design

A fine check covers the body, and the pallu answers it with broad horizontal bands of zari that sit almost sheer against the light. Black holds the outer edge. The bugdi border is woven so its design reads the same on both faces.

How it is woven

Woven by master weaver Aafreen and the master-weaver households of Mominpura, Maheshwar. Handwoven on a pit loom, weft inserted by hand, patterning set on a dobby.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner


2. Air-dry in shade, without wringing


3. Iron inside out on low to medium heat, under a cotton press cloth


4. Store wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin, in a cool dark cupboard


5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

Colour fast on both wash and rub testing, on every colour. Cared for this way, the saree is expected to last and to be passed on.

Held in stock rather than made to order. About half of orders leave the same or next day, most within two to three days, and most orders within India are delivered in three to seven days.

Master weaver Aafreen works in Mominpura, in Maheshwar, at a loom sunk into the floor of the room. The weft is inserted by hand. The patterning on body, border and pallu is set on a dobby.

On this piece the pallu is where the work shows most: broad zari bands laid across the width, so sheer against the light that the gold seems to sit on top of the indigo rather than in it.

The border is bugdi, its design reading the same on both faces, whichever way the pleat happens to turn.

Hold the cloth and it weighs almost nothing. Wear it and it drapes soft and stays soft. The small irregularities are not defects; they are the record of the hand that put each pick in.
