The print

The scale changes between the pieces. The top runs a small, moderately dense repeat, and the dupatta opens right up into the large feather-like motif, placed rather than repeated all over.

That placement is what makes the dupatta the hero of the set. Draped, the motif reads whole rather than as pattern.

Wearing it

Fuchsia at this saturation wants nothing else competing. Stitch a plain kurta, keep the neckline simple, and wear gold. It is the strongest festive and daytime-function colour in this batch and still calm enough for a formal day at work.

A motif at this scale is normally digital, because carving and striking a large block cleanly is difficult. This one was cut in wood and struck by hand.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

A large block is heavy, and it has to land flat: any tilt and one edge of the motif prints faint. The artisan lifts it, sets it, and strikes it with the heel of the hand, then moves on. Across a 2.5 metre dupatta that leaves the placement subtly different each time. Bhagalpur has worked silk for generations and this is how its block printers still work, at a padded table, one impression at a time.

1. Will such a bright pink fade or bleed after washing?
It is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it before first wear, then hand wash gently in cold water and dry it in shade rather than direct sun.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
