The print

There are no accent shades in this one. A black ground, a white botanical repeat, and enough density that the cloth reads mid-grey from across a room and resolves into flowers as you get closer.

High contrast is the least forgiving thing to print by hand: every edge of every impression is visible.

Wearing it

Black is the one shade that carries from an office morning to an evening function without any change of register. Stitch it straight and long, and wear it with either silver or oxidised pieces; gold fights the white.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

On black, white ink has nowhere to hide. The artisan has to load the block evenly every single time, because a light impression reads as a gap and a heavy one bleeds at the edge. That is hundreds of judgements over one 2.5 metre length, made by hand at a padded table in Bhagalpur, where the blocks themselves are carved from wood for each design.

1. Does the white print stay white, or does the black run into it?
It stays white. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, which is the whole risk with a high-contrast print. Dry clean it before first wear, then hand wash gently in cold water.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
