The figure panels

This is the boldest layout in the range: panels of human figures, animals and geometric shapes in magenta, black, brown, orange and green, broken by a section of repeating polka dots and closed with a wide border of alternating patterned bands.

Off white is the ground that shows everything, which is why the colour-fast finish matters more here than anywhere else in the collection - nothing shifts onto the white on the first wash.

Silk and styling

Katan silk gives the panels a soft lustre and a graceful fall; the set weighs 600 to 650 g and stitches to 4XL with the length customisable.

Let the panels stay whole - a straight kurta with minimal seaming keeps the figures intact, and a plain bottom in any one of the accent colours steadies the whole thing. Show your tailor the panel placement before cutting.

The panels are stamped one at a time, so no two lengths carry the figures in quite the same order.

Large blocks are heavy, and a large figurative block has to be placed almost perfectly because there is nowhere for a mistake to hide. The Bhagalpur printer works panel by panel across the off white Katan silk, changing blocks for the polka dot run and again for the wide bordered bands, inking each colour separately. Five colours means five passes, and every one of them has to land where the last one left room.

1. Will the colours run onto the off white background?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

2. Does an off white fabric need a lining?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is needed. Some customers still add one to elevate the drape, but that is a styling choice rather than a requirement.

3. How do I know it is genuinely hand block printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

4. What is in the set and how much fabric is there?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

5. Can it be stitched for a plus size?
Yes. There is enough fabric to stitch a straight kurta set up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for larger sizes.
