The motif

The tulip shapes stand upright in tidy rows, broken here and there by linear floral sprays. Because the motif has a clear top and bottom, the print carries a direction - worth telling your tailor before cutting, so the tulips stand rather than lie sideways.

The dupatta

The dupatta leaves a broad panel of plain red at the centre and frames it on all sides with an intricate floral border, so it reads as a finished piece rather than a matching offcut. No two tulips carry exactly the same weight of colour. A block holds a little more ink on one press than the next, and the fabric keeps the record.

A tulip block is cut in two parts in Bhagalpur - one for the teal body, one for the pale gold detail - and each is pressed separately onto the silk. The printer works down the length setting the second block into the first by eye, tulip after tulip, hundreds of times before the top is done. The border that frames the dupatta needs its own carved blocks again, mitred at the corners by judgement rather than measurement.

1. Does the print have a direction I should tell my tailor about?
Yes. The tulip motifs stand upright, so the top should be cut with the print running the right way up. Mention it before cutting and any tailor will lay the fabric accordingly.

2. Will the teal and gold bleed into the red?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then wash gently in cold water.

3. How is the dupatta patterned?
