Red, figures and border

The human figures are stamped small and dense, so from a distance the red carries a warm golden shimmer and only resolves into folk art when you look properly. Rectangular panels with botanical and geometric bands finish the bottom edge.

Grey grounds part of the set and green appears in the accents, which is why this red survives daylight as easily as lamplight.

No two figures fall in exactly the same place twice; that is the block, moved by hand.

The figure block for this set is small, which means the printer in Bhagalpur must lift, ink and place it hundreds of times across a single 2.5 metre length. Golden yellow is worked over the red so the figures hold their outline instead of sinking into the ground, and the botanical and geometric bands at the hem are stamped last from separate blocks. Look along a seam of repeats and you can read the printer's rhythm - a little tighter here, a little looser there.
