The bloom

The motifs here are larger than most block prints in the range - floral and paisley shapes at a medium scale, printed in cream on a turquoise-leaning royal blue, with light pink appearing inside the blooms.

The dupatta ends in a plain solid band and a fringe of tassels, which stops the eye and gives the busy print somewhere to rest.

Wearing it

A medium-scale floral flatters a taller frame and a straight cut, so keep the kurta long and the silhouette simple. Pearl or cream stone jewellery echoes the print; a cream inner is the obvious choice. It is a strong day-wedding and festive-lunch set.

Larger motifs need larger carved blocks and more careful placement, since every misalignment is visible at this scale. That difficulty is the reason most affordable block prints stay small.

Where two large blooms meet, the join is not invisible. It is not meant to be - that seam is the evidence of a block set down by hand.

A large block is heavy, and it has to be brought down flat and square or the motif smears. In Bhagalpur the printer works with the whole forearm rather than the wrist, pressing the carved block into the silk and lifting it clean, then judging the next placement against the last. The cream goes on first, the pink detail afterwards, and the tassels are attached at the dupatta ends once the cloth is finished.

1. How large are the motifs on this print?
They are medium in scale - noticeably larger than the small repeating paisleys common in block printing - which is why the set reads as floral rather than textured.

2. Will the cream print take colour from the blue in the wash?
The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it once, then wash gently in cold water.

3. Does the dupatta have tassels already?
