Geometry, then not

The torso is worked in tight repeating diamonds, small and symmetrical, dense enough to read as a woven texture from across a room. The dupatta refuses to follow: its borders carry large stylised organic shapes, loose where the torso is strict.

Teal, blue and white surface inside the brown, and a wide horizontal band of solid yellow runs straight across the bottom edge. That single unbroken stretch of colour is what stops a dense geometric set from becoming heavy.

The silk

Deep brown is a shade that flattens on a dull fabric. Katan silk keeps a low lustre under the matte print, so the diamonds hold their edges and the drape stays fluid rather than stiff. The set is opaque and needs no lining.

Styling

Brown and mustard is a winter and festive palette more than a summer one, and it takes gold and antique-finish jewellery well. Have your tailor place the yellow band at the kurta hem so the panel stays whole.

Where the diamonds meet, the register shifts a little. That is a hand at work, not a defect.

Two blocks made this cloth, and they were carved for opposite purposes. One holds a diamond so small that a whole row of them covers a hand's width; the other carries a broad organic shape that takes up half the dupatta border in a single press.

Both are cut from wood in Bhagalpur and both are placed by eye. The small block demands repetition, hundreds of exact-looking impressions that are never quite exact. The large one demands nerve, because a slip shows immediately at that scale. The printer works one and then the other, and the finished set carries the character of each.

1. How can I tell the diamonds were block printed and not machine printed?
Look along a row where two impressions meet. In hand block work the diamonds shift very slightly out of line and the brown reads a shade deeper where the artisan pressed harder. This set is stamped with hand-carved wooden blocks by artisans in Bhagalpur, so those variations run through the whole length. Machine and screen prints are perfectly uniform.

2. Will the brown run onto the yellow band in the wash?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so the yellow panel stays clean. Dry clean the first wash, then a gentle cold hand wash.

3. What are the pieces and their measurements?
A top of 2.5 m at 44 to 45 inches wide, a bottom of 2.5 m at 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 m at 35 to 36 inches wide, 600 to 650 g in total.

4. Can it be stitched up to a plus size?
Yes, up to 4XL for a straight kurta set, and the length can be customised for larger sizes.

6. How should the yellow band be used when stitching?
Ask your tailor to keep the band whole and place it along the kurta hem rather than cutting through the middle of it. With 2.5 m on each piece there is room to plan the cut.

7. What if the brown is not what I expected?
Deep browns photograph warmer or cooler than they look in person. If the shade or the quality is not loved, an exchange is available.
