The borders

The grey body is printed only lightly, with medium floral motifs placed here and there. Everything else is concentrated into the borders: a wide continuous band with an intricate floral edge running above a geometric grid, in pink against white. It is a restrained set that reads formal from a distance and detailed up close.

Styling

Grey is the shade that survives a whole working week, and the pink border is enough to take it to an evening dinner without changing anything but the jewellery. Silver suits the grey; rose gold picks up the border. Ask your tailor to run the border along the kurta hem and the sleeve edge, and keep the rest plain.

The floral edging shifts very slightly along its length, as hand-stamped borders do.

A border is the hardest thing to block print. The artisan must set the carved block down again and again in a straight line, matching each impression to the last, with nothing but the eye to guide it. The pink and white bands on this grey silk were built that way in Bhagalpur, block by block, over the full 2.5 metres of each piece.

1. Can this be stitched for a fuller size?
Yes. Each piece is 2.5 m long, the top and bottom are 44 to 45 inches wide, and the set can be stitched up to 4XL, with the length customised for larger sizes.

2. Do I need a lining under this kurta?
No. The silk is opaque, so it needs no lining or aster. Many customers add one anyway, purely to give the kurta more body and a more formal fall.

3. Will the pink border bleed onto the grey?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, which is what keeps a pale grey ground clean under a pink border.

4. How do I know this is hand block printed and not machine printed?
Look at the repeats. Hand block printing leaves tiny shifts where one carved wooden block meets the next, and a little variation in how deeply the colour sits. Screen and machine printing repeat perfectly. Every metre of this set was stamped by hand in Bhagalpur, so those small differences are the proof, not a flaw.

5. What if I do not like the shade when it arrives?
