The peacock print

Two colours only, red and cream, which is what gives the print its clarity: the vines carry the movement and the peacocks land at intervals along them. The dupatta ends in a fringe and the bottom piece carries a horizontal band of pattern.

An ornate motif on a two-colour ground reads far dressier than it costs, and it stays wearable long after a heavily embellished piece has become an occasion-only buy.

Silk, fit and styling

Katan silk lends the red its lustre and drape and stays opaque, so no lining is needed. The three pieces weigh 600 to 650 g together.

Best stitched as a straight kurta so the vines run unbroken; gold jhumkas and a cream or gold sandal finish it for a day wedding or a festive lunch, while a plain cream bottom keeps it office-appropriate.

The peacocks sit slightly differently along each length - a hand-placed block does not repeat itself perfectly.

A peacock is a demanding block to carve: tail, crest and body all have to survive being cut into wood and then inked hundreds of times. In Bhagalpur the printer stamps the vine first so the ground has its movement, then places each bird along it by eye. Cream on red leaves no room to hide a slip, which is why this print is a fair test of a printer's hand - and why the small shifts between repeats are worth looking for.

1. Will the red bleed into the cream peacocks in the wash?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

2. How do I know the peacocks are block printed and not machine printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

3. What is included in the set?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

4. Can it be stitched up to 4XL?
