The print

Blue circular motifs alternate with small white leaf sprigs across a coral red ground, with metallic gold picking out the smaller details. The repeat runs all over rather than in panels, which makes it the most straightforward of the group to cut and stitch.

Styling

Coral is warmer and easier than a true red, which makes this a formal and office set as much as a festive one. Gold jewellery follows the metallic detail in the print, and a plain blue piping drawn from the circles finishes a straight kurta neatly.

Because every impression is stamped by hand, small shifts in the print are part of the piece, not a fault in it.

An all-over repeat gives the printer nowhere to hide, since every impression must sit at the same interval as the last across two and a half metres. In Bhagalpur the circle block and the leaf sprig block are alternated across the coral red Katan silk. Every impression is placed by hand, so the small shifts where two blocks meet are the artisan's signature rather than a fault.

1. Will the blue and white bleed into the coral red?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so lighter areas of the print stay clean.

2. How can I tell the print is genuinely hand done?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the register shifts a little and no two impressions land identically. A screen or machine print gives a flat, perfectly uniform repeat; this one does not.

3. What does the unstitched set include?
Three separate unstitched pieces: top, bottom and dupatta. The top and bottom are 2.5 metres each and 44 to 45 inches wide, and the dupatta is 2.5 metres and 35 to 36 inches wide.

4. Does it need a lining?
No. The fabric is opaque, so it can be stitched unlined. A lining is purely optional, added only to elevate the look.
