The print

The spirals repeat at a steady, medium rhythm, and between them sit single blue floral sprays that break the pattern up rather than crowd it. It reads graphic from a distance and detailed up close, which is why this one photographs flatter than it wears.

Along the roll edge the block changes to a wave, so the finished dupatta already carries an edge treatment without any extra trim.

Wearing it

Lime is a daylight colour. Stitch it as a straight kurta with the bottom for office and daily wear, or add a fitted sleeve and a plain gold-toned jhumka for a daytime function. Keep jewellery warm-metal and minimal; the print is doing the talking.

Most block print you find at this price is cotton. Getting the same genuine hand-block craft on a silk that drapes and holds a sheen is the reason to take this one over a cotton set.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

In Bhagalpur, a city that has worked with silk for generations, an artisan lays a hand-carved wooden block onto stretched cloth and strikes it with the heel of the hand. Then again, a block-width along, and again, down the whole 2.5 metres. The spiral here took one block, the blue spray another, each aligned by eye against the last impression. It is slow, and it is why the repeat breathes instead of marching. Nothing about this length was printed by a machine.

1. Is this really hand block printed, or is it a printed imitation?
It is genuinely hand block printed, using hand-carved wooden blocks pressed by artisans in Bhagalpur. You can see it in the spirals: the spacing shifts slightly between repeats and the depth of pink varies from one impression to the next, which a screen or roller print never does.

2. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
