The print

The vertical stripe is the structure and the heart-shaped floral is the event, with faint rose outlines filling the space between the two. It is an all-over repeat, but one with a clear direction to it.

A directional print is worth telling your tailor about: cut with the stripe running down the body, it lengthens the line.

Wearing it

Dark blue with pink is a good evening pairing and an easy office one. Stitch it straight, keep the dupatta long, and choose silver over gold so the pink stays the brightest thing in the outfit.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

Aligning a floral against a stripe is the test of a block printer. The stripe leaves no room to fudge, so each floral impression has to be judged against a line already on the cloth. The Bhagalpur artisans who print these lengths do it by eye, block in hand, working down a padded table. 1. How can I tell this is hand block printed rather than screen printed?
Follow the stripe. On a hand block print the florals sit at slightly different distances from the line as the repeat goes down the cloth, and the ink is fuller on some impressions than others. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time.

2. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
