A restrained black body worked with fine buta, and a deep red pallu held inside a gold border. Very little happening, and all of it deliberate.

The design

The buta on the black body are small and widely spaced, which is what keeps the piece minimal. The red pallu is bordered in gold and carries the floral motif at a larger scale. A golden geometric zari border runs the length of both edges of the drape. The bugdi border is woven so that its design reads the same on both faces.

Handwoven on a pit loom in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, with the weft inserted by hand and the buta set on a dobby.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

A minimal saree is harder than a busy one. With buta this widely spaced across black, there is nothing to distract the eye from a wobble in the beat, and the weaver has to hold the body even for its full length before the red pallu is reached.

The border is bugdi, woven so its design reads the same on both faces.

Off the loom it is featherlight and soft, drapes close and holds its pleats. The small unevennesses in it are the fingerprint of hand weaving, present in a piece that is otherwise finished and checked before dispatch.

What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi describes the woven border design, which reads the same on both faces of the border. It is a feature you can turn over in your hand and see for yourself.

What is a flower buti?
Buti is the small woven motif scattered across a saree, worked into the cloth on the loom rather than printed or embroidered on afterwards. A flower buti is that motif in a floral shape. Buta is the same motif family at a larger scale than buti. On this piece the black body carries fine buta and the red pallu takes the floral motif.

Will I need a petticoat with this?
The body is semi-sheer, which is what gives the saree its weight of 350-360 g and its 44-46 GSM. Wear it with a petticoat in a matching or complementary shade. The same lightness is why it drapes softly and holds its pleats through a long evening.
