One colour, worked close

This set stays with a single leaf green and one small white motif, repeated close enough that the cloth reads as textured rather than patterned. Nothing competes; the subtle sheen of the silk does most of the work.

The dupatta breaks that discipline exactly once, with an ornate foliage-style border panel and fringed edges, and the bottom fabric carries a single decorative band at its base.

Wearing it

A monochrome green is the most versatile thing you can own in ethnic wear - it takes gold, silver, oxidised metal and pearls equally, and it works at a desk, at a puja and at a day wedding. Stitch it straight and simple; this print does not want a busy silhouette.

Small, close, single-colour block work takes far more stamps per metre than a large motif. It is slower to make and much harder to fake, and it is why this set looks quietly expensive.

The motif spacing tightens and opens a little across the length. That is the hand finding its rhythm, and it is the surest sign the print is not machine made.

A small motif means more presses - thousands of them for one suit length. The Bhagalpur artisan inks the block, sets it down, lifts it clean and steps along, keeping the spacing by eye alone for two and a half metres at a stretch. The dupatta border is a separate, larger block with the foliage design cut into it, and the fringe is finished by hand at the ends. It is repetitive, skilled work, and the evenness of it is the achievement.
