Violet and ivory

The motif is intricate for a block print - birds threaded through fine florals, repeated all over at a medium scale - and holding it to two colours is what keeps it from turning busy. The plain ivory panel and its fringe give the eye somewhere to rest.

Violet is a shade the block-print market mostly leaves to cotton, so on Katan silk it arrives with a lustre these prints usually do not have.

Wearing it

The silk drapes gracefully, stays opaque enough to skip a lining, and the whole set weighs 600 to 650 g. There is enough fabric to stitch a straight kurta set up to 4XL, and the length can be customised beyond that.

Silver or pearl jewellery keeps the violet cool and office-ready; gold and a deeper lip take the same set to a festive evening. An ivory bottom is the safest partner if you stitch the printed piece as the kurta.

Fine motifs shift a fraction between impressions, which is exactly what a hand-placed block does.

Fine work is where hand block printing either convinces or falls apart. The bird-and-floral block used here in Bhagalpur is cut with enough detail that the printer has to ink it lightly and press evenly, or the flowers close up. Ivory over magenta violet shows every decision. The plain panel at the end of the dupatta is left bare and fringed by hand - a deliberate pause after all that pattern.

3. How can I tell the print is hand done?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

4. What are the dimensions of each piece?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

5. Is a lining required?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is needed. Some customers still add one to elevate the drape, but that is a styling choice rather than a requirement.
