Description +

Indigo blue, under a fine check

An indigo that stays deep in daylight, crossed by a small check and edged in a bronze-touched gold.

The design

Thin intersecting threads make a close check over the whole body. At the edges the colour changes hand entirely, into a broad border where bronze sits against gold and catches the light as you move. The bugdi border is woven so the design reads the same on both faces.

How it is woven

Woven in Mominpura, the weaving quarter of Maheshwar, on a pit loom with the weft inserted by hand. The check and the border are set on a dobby.

What you receive

  • Unstitched Maheshwari silk saree, 6.3-6.5 m in total length including an attached, unstitched blouse piece of 80-90 cm in the same weave as the body, included in the stated price

  • Width 45-46 inches

  • 350-360 g at 44-46 GSM, measured in-house

  • Semi-sheer body; wear with a petticoat

  • Woven in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh; country of origin India

  • Net quantity: one saree with attached blouse piece

  • Pallu kuchu, selvedge and edges finished; every piece checked before dispatch

  • Fall, pico and edge finishing available on request

Care and storage

  1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

  2. Air-dry in shade, without wringing

  3. Iron inside out on low to medium heat, under a cotton press cloth

  4. Store wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin, in a cool dark cupboard

  5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

Colour fast on both wash and rub testing, on every colour. Cared for this way, the saree is expected to last and to be passed on.

Colour

Every handloom saree is individually woven by skilled artisans. Slight variations in weave, texture, and colour are natural characteristics of handcrafted textiles and reflect the authenticity of genuine artisan craftsmanship. Colours may vary slightly between screens and in natural light

Dispatch

Held in stock rather than made to order. About half of orders leave the same or next day, most within two to three days, and most orders within India are delivered in three to seven days.

Craft & Story +

The weaving happens in Mominpura, a quarter of Maheshwar where the looms are pits in the ground and the working day is measured in inches of cloth rather than hours.

The weaver inserts the weft by hand. A dobby lifts the pattern so the check comes up fine and close across the indigo, and the bronze-gold border grows at the edge of the same web, not sewn on afterwards.

That border is bugdi. Its design reads the same on both faces, which is the kind of detail you only notice once, and then keep noticing.

Held up to the window the cloth is semi-sheer and almost weightless. Worn, it holds its pleats through a long evening. The small unevennesses in it are the mark of hand weaving.

FAQ +
1. What gives the border its bronze tone?
The border is a broad zari band worked in a bronze-gold tone against the indigo body, which is what makes the edge read warm while the body stays cool and deep.

2. What exactly arrives, and what are the measurements?
An unstitched Maheshwari silk drape measuring 6.3-6.5 m in total length and 45-46 inches wide, weighing 350-360 g at 44-46 GSM. The total length includes an attached, unstitched blouse piece of 80-90 cm in the same weave as the body, which is included in the stated price. Fall, pico and edge finishing are not done before dispatch, but we will do them on request.

3. How is the hand weaving evidenced?
It is handwoven on a pit loom, with the weft inserted by hand and the patterning on body, border and pallu set on a dobby. These sarees are woven in Mominpura, Maheshwar, in Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh. The Handloom Mark is held with the registration on record, and every piece is checked before it leaves us. Nothing we sell is machine-woven.

4. What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi describes the woven border design, which reads the same on both faces of the border. It is a feature you can turn over in your hand and see for yourself.

5. Will I need a petticoat with this?
The body is semi-sheer, which is what gives the saree its weight of 350-360 g and its 44-46 GSM. Wear it with a petticoat in a matching or complementary shade. The same lightness is why it drapes softly and holds its pleats through a long evening.

6. Will the colour I receive match the photograph?
Every handloom saree is individually woven by skilled artisans. Slight variations in weave, texture, and colour are natural characteristics of handcrafted textiles and reflect the authenticity of genuine artisan craftsmanship. Colours may vary slightly between screens and in natural light If the shade does not match or you are unhappy with the quality, we will exchange the piece.

7. How should I clean and store it?
Dry clean only. Air-dry in shade without wringing, iron inside out on low to medium heat under a cotton press cloth, then store the saree wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin in a cool dark cupboard, refolding it every three to six months. Home washing is not recommended.

8. What occasions does an indigo like this suit?
Festival and festive dressing, formal and ethnic occasions, lighter events, and weddings or receptions attended as a guest. It carries well as party wear too.

9. What is your return and exchange window?
Returns and exchanges are accepted within two days, provided the piece is unused, with its tags intact and in its original packaging. Exchange is also offered where the colour does not match or you are dissatisfied with the quality.

10. When will it ship, and do you deliver outside India?
The saree is dispatched from stock, not made to order: about half of orders leave the same or next day and most within two to three days, with delivery in three to seven days for most orders in India. Shipping within India is free, cash on delivery is available, and we ship worldwide with international charges billed on actuals.
