A muted, misted dark green worked through with a small check, and a wide gold border that lifts it.

The design

Thin intersecting threads make a close, small-scale check over the whole body, so the green reads as depth rather than flatness. Broad rectangular borders in metallic gold run the length of both edges. The bugdi border reads the same on both faces.

How it is woven

Woven in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, on a pit loom with the weft inserted by hand and the check set on a dobby across body, border and pallu.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

Colour fast on both wash and rub testing, on every colour. Cared for this way, the saree is expected to last and to be passed on.

Held in stock rather than made to order. About half of orders leave the same or next day, most within two to three days, and most orders within India are delivered in three to seven days.

The master-weaver households of Mominpura, in Maheshwar, weave these sarees on pit looms, seated with the loom below floor level and the cloth growing in front of them.

The weft is inserted by hand. The check on this piece is small and close, which means more picks, more attention and a slower day at the loom, and it is why the dark green reads as depth rather than a flat wash of colour.

Gold runs the length of both edges, woven in as the cloth grows.

The border is bugdi, so its design reads the same on both faces. The finished cloth is featherlight and semi-sheer, and the faint unevennesses in it are the evidence of hand weaving rather than a flaw in it.

4. What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi describes the woven border design, which reads the same on both faces of the border. It is a feature you can turn over in your hand and see for yourself.

5. Is the fabric transparent?
The body is semi-sheer, which is what gives the saree its weight of 350-360 g and its 44-46 GSM. Wear it with a petticoat in a matching or complementary shade. The same lightness is why it drapes softly and holds its pleats through a long evening.

6. Will the colour I receive match the photograph?

7. How should I clean and store it?
Dry clean only. Air-dry in shade without wringing, iron inside out on low to medium heat under a cotton press cloth, then store the saree wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin in a cool dark cupboard, refolding it every three to six months. Home washing is not recommended.

8. Where does a dark green like this work?

9. What is your return and exchange window?
