What you receive

An unstitched drape, with an unstitched blouse piece attached to the saree and included in the price. Fall and pico are not done as standard, but both are available on request.

How it is woven

Hand weaving here means a pit loom and a weft inserted by hand. The dobby carries the flower buti and the border pattern across body, border and pallu. No part of the cloth is machine-woven. The Handloom Mark is on record against these pieces. Each piece is checked before it leaves us; kuchu, selvedge and edges are already finished.

The border

Bugdi border: the woven design in the border reads the same on both of its faces. The design is a double design border, two parallel border designs worked together in golden zari, with flower buti repeating across body and pallu.

Colour

Every colour in this range is fast on wash and on rub. What can vary is your screen: displays render shade differently, so the saree in hand may read a little differently from the photograph.

Care and storage

Care is Dry Clean Only. In sequence:

  1. Professional dry clean only.

  2. Air-dry in the shade. Never wring the cloth.

  3. Iron inside out on a low to medium setting, under a cotton press cloth.

  4. Store wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin, in a cool dark cupboard.

  5. Refold every three to six months.

Dispatch

Nothing here is woven to order. Stock dispatch means about half of all orders leave the next day and most within two to three days, with delivery in three to seven days for most Indian addresses. You will find small irregularities in the cloth. They are characteristic of hand weaving and are present in every finished piece.

Craft & Story +
A horizontal split, cut clean: dark red for the length of the body, orange for the pallu, with no blending between them, and the join is woven rather than printed.

Hand weaving here means a pit loom and a weft inserted by hand. The dobby carries the flower buti and the border pattern across body, border and pallu. No part of the cloth is machine-woven. The address is Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh.

The border is woven bugdi, so the border design reads the same on both faces. Squared off like that, the saree reads almost geometric on the hanger and completely different on the body.

Minor irregularity in the weave is what hand weaving looks like up close, and it is present in these finished pieces. The Handloom Mark is held with the registration on record. These are family looms, and the weaving has been passed down within the household.

FAQ +
1. What exactly do I receive, and what are the measurements?
One saree, 6.3 to 6.5 metres in total length and 45 to 46 inches wide, with an 80 to 90 cm blouse piece attached to it and included in the price. It weighs 350 to 360 grams at 44 to 46 GSM. Every one of those figures is measured in-house, and they are uniform across this weave.

2. Is the saree stitched? What is the blouse piece?
The saree is an unstitched drape. The blouse piece is unstitched fabric, not a stitched blouse, 80 to 90 cm long and 45 to 46 inches wide, attached to the saree and included in the stated price. Fall and pico are not done as standard, but both are available on request. They are not done before dispatch as standard.

3. How do I know this is handwoven and not powerloom?
Hand weaving here means a pit loom and a weft inserted by hand. The dobby carries the flower buti and the border pattern across body, border and pallu. No part of the cloth is machine-woven. The Handloom Mark is on record against these pieces. Each piece is checked before it leaves us; kuchu, selvedge and edges are already finished. The weaving is done in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh.

4. What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi border: the woven design in the border reads the same on both of its faces. It is a distinguishing feature of this weave, and one you can turn the border over and check for yourself.

5. How should I clean and store this saree?
Dry Clean Only. In order: professional dry clean; air-dry in the shade without wringing; iron inside out on low to medium under a cotton press cloth; store wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin in a cool dark cupboard; and refold every three to six months. Refolding is what protects the zari border along the fold lines. Home washing is not recommended.

6. Will the colour bleed on the first clean?
Colour is fast on both wash and rub testing, across every colour in this range. Our tracked colour-complaint rate on this weave is negligible.

7. What if the shade that arrives is different from the photograph?
Screens render colour differently, so a small difference between the photograph and the cloth in hand is possible. If the colour does not match, or you are not happy with the quality, we will exchange the piece within the stated window and condition requirements.

8. Is the saree see-through? What do I wear under it?
The body is semi-sheer. At 44 to 46 GSM that is what gives the saree its lightness, and it means a petticoat is needed underneath. Matching the petticoat to the body shade rather than the pallu gives the cleanest line.

9. Which occasions does this saree suit?
It is made for festive and formal occasions, ethnic wear, parties, and wedding or reception wear as a guest. It is a light drape rather than a heavy one, which is what makes it wearable through a long function.

10. What is flower buti, and what is a double design border?
Buti is the small repeating motif scattered across the cloth; flower buti is the floral form of it, worked small on the body and larger on the pallu. A double design border is two parallel border designs woven together along the length of the drape. Zari is the trade name for the woven border, the pallu banding and the buti detailing in this design.

11. How quickly is it dispatched and delivered?
Nothing here is woven to order. Stock dispatch means about half of all orders leave the next day and most within two to three days, with delivery in three to seven days for most Indian addresses. Shipping within India is free and Cash on Delivery is available. We ship worldwide, with international carriage charged on actuals.

12. How long will it last?
Cared for as instructed, this is a saree to keep and to pass on. The drape does not stiffen or soften after the first clean, and the tracked defect rate on this weave is negligible.

13. There are tiny irregularities in the weave. Is that a defect?
Minor irregularity in the weave is what hand weaving looks like up close, and it is present in these finished pieces. They are the evidence that the weft went in by hand rather than through a machine. Each piece is still checked before dispatch, with tassels, selvedge and edges finished.

14. Can I return or exchange it?
Returns and exchanges are accepted within 2 days of delivery, provided the saree is unused and comes back with its tags and original packaging. If the colour does not match what you expected, or you are not happy with the quality, we will exchange the piece.
