Mustard yellow, deep maroon pallu

A deep mustard yellow with small flower buti across it, closing in a maroon so dark it reads almost brown until the light finds the gold in it.

The design

The buti sit sparsely on the mustard, giving the body a quiet, traditional surface. The maroon pallu is banded horizontally in lustrous gold and carries larger flower buti between the bands. A golden geometric zari border runs the length of both edges. The bugdi border is woven so that its design reads the same on both faces.

Handwoven on a pit loom in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, with the weft inserted by hand and the buti and border set on a dobby.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner


2. Air-dry in shade, without wringing


3. Iron inside out on low to medium heat, under a cotton press cloth


4. Store wrapped in breathable cotton or muslin, in a cool dark cupboard


5. Refold every three to six months so the same folds do not settle in

In Mominpura, a quarter of Maheshwar, the working day is measured in inches of cloth rather than hours. The weaver sits at a pit loom and passes the weft by hand.

Mustard and deep maroon are an old pairing here, and the weaver builds them in sequence: the whole mustard body with its buti first, then the maroon pallu with its gold banding, without ever seeing the finished drape as a wearer will see it.

The border is bugdi, so its design reads the same on both faces.

The cloth is featherlight at the end of it, soft enough to pleat in a moment and steady enough to hold the pleats. Its small irregularities are the fingerprint of the hand.

What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi describes the woven border design, which reads the same on both faces of the border. It is a feature you can turn over in your hand and see for yourself.

What is a flower buti?
Buti is the small woven motif scattered across a saree, worked into the cloth on the loom rather than printed or embroidered on afterwards. A flower buti is that motif in a floral shape. On this saree they are small and sparse on the mustard body, and larger between the gold bands of the maroon pallu.

How sheer is the body?
The body is semi-sheer, which is what gives the saree its weight of 350-360 g and its 44-46 GSM. Wear it with a petticoat in a matching or complementary shade. The same lightness is why it drapes softly and holds its pleats through a long evening.
